in The Wilderness

In the wilderness, time is seemingly endless.

Perhaps that is why grief nestles in and makes its home.

The promised land was so close… and now, it may feel so distant.

In a season where all may feel lost and uncertain, and hope is nowhere to be found, it is there that the wilderness can feel never-ending; a place in which to hide the depths of your soul. It’s far easier to hide the cracks and the missing pieces than to examine the damage. Oh, that we had wings like a dove…

We could fly away and be at rest.

It’s easy to see the wilderness as a terrible season in life—the kind of season where the path isn’t clear and storms seem ready to toss you all around.

Maybe your brokenness or the brokenness of someone you love feels inescapable and overwhelming—the steps to heal seem like a long road and the detours gnaw at your heart. Maybe it’s simply human to wonder where God is when the trees shudder under the weight of the storm and the thunder is deafening.

And yet, that still, small voice…

“Come to me, all who are weary and in need of rest…”

In the days that grief seems to be the only visible companion, it is the space between where faith expands beyond the human heart and into uncharted territory where only God can reach.

The wilderness is where we have the opportunity to see God’s sovereignty and His character—no longer able to be filtered and defined by the brokenness of people around us. It is simply you, and Him.

Wilderness isn’t used for hiding…

It’s where we can come, hungry and exhausted, with nothing to give—and remain at the feet of Jesus. In the storm and wilderness, hope can grow again.

“For my yoke is easy to bear…”

Oh friend, will you still hide among the trees as the storm rages when the shelter of His arms awaits you?

Hope and life await through the wilderness and suffering. It is here that your refining will be your freedom.

Let go, friend.

Drop the burdens and take shelter with your Creator.

Step into the rest and follow that still, small voice.

Dare to hope for the beauty that the Lord is surely painting for His glory.
